Is it OK to use torture on terrorists?  Are there any limits on "what type of torture?"  Who should set the rule? What right does the "public" have to know about this?

The opinions:

"The fundamental point here [is] we distinguish ourselves from our enemies by our treatment of our enemies. And if we engaged in the same kind of abuses that they did, then we're no longer any different from them."

The public law may never come to condoning torture in any circumstance, but I would not condemn it.  If someone chose to torture one of my family after having made a 'wrong decision' then he has made that wrong decision. I would never seek revenge, but I would seek justice.  I would be willing to use torture to PREVENT their death, but not revenge it.

Bush administration lawyers contended last year that the president wasn't bound by laws prohibiting torture and that government agents who might torture prisoners at his direction couldn't be prosecuted by the Justice Department.

Knowing full well that we were walking a tight rope, trying to fight a war, quell disturbances and build a republic for Iraq in the midst of all the terrorist resistance, CBS published these abhorrent pictures knowing they would destroy completely our image and standing in the Muslim world.

The problem with torture is that we have lived too long in a world where "war" was fought by "rules of proper behavior."  Since that is no longer the case we have to make the tough decision to survive rather than die just because of "rules" that we wish were being followed, but are not.  Our survival is at stake -- unfortunately that is more important than "civil rules of behavior."  If torture is to be condoned, then we MUST trust the guy at the top to implement careful control, and keep it secret from the world.  CBS was guilty of Treason for publishing those prison pictures!

Society is fighting a cultural war just as important as the war on terrorism.  When we abandon minimum levels of civilized behavior we are, then, no better than the beasts -- and no "physical survival" is worth the "loss of honor."  It is not so much that there people, who may rightly be labeled "terrorists" can be "reasoned with," but that we MUST find a way to stop the mad, evil person without resorting to the very barbarism which he demonstrates with his behavior.  CBS is to be commended for letting the public know what is really going on.  There is no middle ground here -- CBS is the hero!

I don't care for either of the way the above two choices are worded -- they are too extreme. I do not Wish To Vote on one of them, but am willing to give my opinion on this issue below.
